Frequently Asked Questions
Hopefully this will answer some of your questions, but please do get in touch if you would like more information.

What should I wear to my first session?
You do not need to buy anything before joining us on the mats. For your first sessions comfortable sports clothing such as shorts or tracksuit bottoms and a t-shirt are fine. Try to avoid wearing anything with zips or hard buttons.
Do I need to buy a uniform?
The 'uniform' you might have seen us training in is called a Gi. We wear these hard wearing kimonos and trousers to prevent us damaging our every day clothes, and to make some of the techniques which we train more comfortable. Once you have been training for a while we would encourage you to buy your own gi. We can help and advise you on this.
Do you run children's classes?
At present we do not offer classes for those under 18. Our Friends at Shin Sekai Ju Jitsu do offer youth sessions:
Are your session suitable for both men and women?
All of our sessions are open to all genders.
Do you get hurt when training?
The difficulty that comes with training ju jitsu or any martial art which looks at inflicting damage and pain is that we don’t want to cause harm to our training partners and we all need to go to work the next day.
We train with measures to avoid injury, such as using pads for practicing striking, showing control throughout techniques, tapping early with locking techniques, instruction and supervision from experienced practitioners, and generally showing the respect to our training partners that we would wish to receive ourselves.
This means we have a very good record of people not getting injured on our mats.
Do I need to know about traditions such as bowing?
On the mat we do carry out some small traditional Japanese training practices such as bowing to your training partner. You do not need to know anything about this in advance, you are not going to cause us any offence by not knowing.
